This archive report was first published on 8 January 2020.

On January 8, 2020, Kenya Power faced a major scandal involving some of its employees inflating electricity bills for personal gain.

However, the utility deserves praise for taking the revelations seriously and investigating complaints by customers.

Some wayward staff have been found out and sacked, and the masterminds of this massive scam will hopefully face justice.

Kenya Power has also been prompt in cracking down on electricity thieves, but this thieving culture will not be uprooted overnight.

According to the utility, it loses Sh1.2 billion every year through illegal connections in Mombasa alone, posing a grave danger to the beneficiary households.

However, Kenya Power knows that this theft occurs mainly through collusion with its dishonest staff, making the success of this campaign dependent on dismantling the internal link in the electricity theft racket.
