On January 6, 2020, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko nominated Anne Kananu Mwenda as the new Deputy Governor of Nairobi County. The nomination has been met with mixed reactions, with some questioning the timing given Sonko's current corruption charges and court-ordered suspension from office.
Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi has announced that the nomination will be discussed in plenary when the assembly resumes sittings in February. According to Elachi, the assembly will only vet Mwenda once the Jubilee party approves her nomination.
Elachi has convened a special sitting this Thursday to discuss the leadership crisis in the county. The meeting comes after a two-hour closed-door session between MCAs, who reached a consensus on a plan to oversee the resumption of normalcy in running the county's affairs.
Among the resolutions is tabling a motion to discuss the nomination and vetting of Anne Kananu Mwenda for the position of Nairobi Deputy Governor in February. Mwenda, who is currently the chief officer of disaster management and acting chief officer of water, has been nominated to fill the vacant position.
The nomination has sparked debate, with some questioning Sonko's ability to make such a nomination given his current legal woes. The High Court has declined to stop Sonko's planned impeachment by MCAs, further deepening his troubles.
