From November 18 to December 8, 2019, the third edition of the Urbanville Basketball Camp in Kisumu, Kenya, provided a platform for top basketball schools to develop their young talent and promote social responsibility.
Organized by Oliver Nyawanda, a player for Lakeside in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Men's Premier League, the camp attracted over 50 players from top-performing schools, including Laiser Hill Academy, the reigning national basketball champions.
The camp's main objective was to develop young talent in basketball by imparting basic fundamentals, such as shooting, passing, and dribbling. Guest coaches, including renowned local coaches like Ronnie Owino, Mayienga, and John Otieno, assisted Nyawanda in coaching the participants.
As part of their social responsibility program, the campers visited Agape Children's Home on January 1 and donated clothes and foodstuff. The camp's success was evident in the bigger turnout compared to the previous two editions.
According to Nyawanda, the camp's goal is to inspire young upcoming talents in schools so that they can continue playing basketball either in the local league or abroad.
Through partnerships with KCBL and Big Dreams Africa, kids have received opportunities to get scholarships to study and play basketball in high schools and universities in Kenya, Uganda, and the US.
Urbanville basketball plans to hold three camps in 2020 - April, August, and December - with guest coaches from Kenya, Uganda, and the US who will scout for talent and provide input towards developing the participants.
