On January 7, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Kerman, Iran, during the funeral procession of a top general killed in a US strike.

State television reported that a number of Iranian mourners died in a stampede, with the head of the country's emergency services, Pirhossein Koolivand, confirming the incident.

AFP correspondents in Kerman described the streets as packed with mourners for the funeral of Republican Guards commander Qasem Soleimani in his hometown.

Soleimani, the head of the Guards' Quds Force, was assassinated on January 3, 2020, in a US drone strike near Baghdad international airport, sending shockwaves throughout the Islamic republic.
