Kenyan midfielder Anthony Akumu, 27, has been linked with a move to South African side Kaizer Chiefs, following his decision to reject a contract renewal offer at Zambian side Zesco United.
Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has remained tight-lipped about the potential signing, citing the need for everything to be finalized before making any comments.
However, Middendorp used the example of Baroka midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane, who was recently signed by Cape Town City despite Baroka claiming he had a valid two-year contract with the club.
"You saw this player who went to Cape Town City, everyone was jubilating – ‘He’s a free player…’ but, he’s not. He has another two-year contract [with Baroka], so it will be very interesting to see how (Akumu signing) pans out," Ernst told Kick Off.
Chiefs are not the only team interested in Akumu, with Tanzanian giant Simba SC and TP Mazembe also reportedly targeting the midfielder. However, according to reliable sources close to the player, he prefers a move to the South African top-tier.
