The Kenya Ferry Services has embarked on a major upgrade of the Likoni channel, a critical transportation route that handles over 300,000 passengers and 6,000 vehicles daily.

According to the Managing Director, Bakari Gowa, the upgrade, which costs Sh74 million, aims to improve passenger comfort and reduce flooding during the rainy season.

As part of the upgrade, contractors have started constructing a drainage system on the south mainland side, cabro walkways and commuter sheds on the island side.

Mr. Gowa explained, “We want to change the face of the ferry area and ensure comfort for passengers. Benches for passengers waiting to board ferries on the island side will also be provided.”

The upgrade is expected to be completed in April this year, with the works already underway on both the mainland and island sides.

Additionally, the Kenya Ferry Services is repairing the Mtongwe pontoon at a cost of about Sh20 million to resume passenger services.

The Likoni channel upgrade comes in the wake of a tragic incident last year, when Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu plunged into the ocean in their car, leading to renewed calls for the improvement of the channel.
