Decluttering Your Closet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Published on January 7, 2020

As we start a new year, many of us are eager to get rid of the baggage from the past year and decade. One of the most effective ways to do this is by decluttering our living spaces, starting with our closets. In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to declutter your closet effectively.

My personal experience with decluttering began when I realized how much anxiety owning too much stuff was causing me. I decided to take the plunge and get rid of all the things I had accumulated over the years. My first stop was my closet, which was overflowing with clothes, shoes, and jewelry.

Step 1: Remove Everything from Your Closet and Drawers

Start by taking out everything from your closet and drawers and placing it on your bed. This will give you a blank canvas to work with when it comes time to put everything back.

Now that your closet is empty, take the time to clean it. Dust the shelves and hanging rails, change the lining if necessary, and tighten any loose screws.

Step 2: Categorize Your Clothing

Put dresses together, shirts together, smart trousers together, jeans together, and so on. This will help you have a clear vision of what you own and make it easier to declutter.

Step 3: Go Through Each Item One at a Time

Ask yourself, 'Does this item bring me joy?' If the answer is no, it's likely time to let it go. Consider the fit, condition, and your personal style when deciding what to keep and what to discard.

Remember, the goal of decluttering is to keep only what brings you joy and makes you feel good. By following these steps, you can achieve a clutter-free closet that brings you peace and happiness.
