Published on January 6, 2020, residents of villages in Lamu County that border Manda military base are fleeing for fear of attacks by the terror group Al-Shabaab.

Their fears were fueled by an ambush at the base on Saturday, in a county that has borne the brunt of attacks by the Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Recent attacks by Al-Shabaab have escalated in Kenya, with the group attacking a bus in Nyongoro on Thursday, killing three people.

Residents of the villages said they could not risk staying as they were easy targets for the militants.

At Sina Mbio Village, less than 10 out of 86 families remained on Monday, according to headman Hassan Chonde.

Magogoni and Kwasasi villages, adjacent to the Manda-Magogoni Naval Base, were among the most affected areas.

A large group of villagers was pictured heading to Hindi town with luggage, highlighting the scale of the exodus.
