On January 6, 2020, the Ministry of Health issued a statement to clarify the distribution of HIV drugs in Kenya.
The Ministry refuted claims that no HIV drugs meant for Kenya were diverted due to non-payment of taxes by the government.
According to the Ministry, all health products procured under the President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund are tax exempt.
“The Ministry wishes to clarify that no single dose of ARV procured by PEPFAR through USAID for Kenya has been diverted to any other country due to non-payment of taxes imposed by the Government,” the statement read.
The Ministry further stated that procurement under the PEPFAR funding stream is ongoing, with shipments from various vendors expected in the country beginning January 2020.
The National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) oversees the distribution of all health products, ensuring that HIV drugs reach those in need.
