On January 6, 2020, the Office of the President, through the Immigration Department, announced its compliance with a High Court order to facilitate the return of lawyer Miguna Miguna to Kenya.

The High Court had directed the government to allow Miguna back into the country using his Kenyan Passport or National Identification Card.

According to the court order, the government was required to facilitate Miguna's entry into Kenya on January 7, 2020, or any other date appointed by the petitioner, using his National Identity Card or Kenya Passport.

Justice Weldon Korir issued the order, which also directed the government to issue Miguna with his Kenyan Passport and allow his lawyer, Dr. John Khaminwa, unhindered access to the politician upon his arrival at JKIA.

Following the court order, Alexander Muteshi, the Director-General of Immigration, issued a statement confirming the department's compliance with the order.

‘This is to confirm that in compliance with court orders issued on December 14, 2018, the Directorate will facilitate Dr. Miguna Miguna’s entry into Kenya,’ Muteshi stated.

Miguna had announced his return to Kenya on Sunday, January 5, 2020, after being deported over 20 months earlier following his involvement in the swearing-in of ODM leader Raila Odinga as the people’s president on January 30, 2018.
