January 6, 2020, marked the end of Lynette Njeru's tenure as the Kirinyaga county executive committee member for gender and youth. Her resignation came as a surprise to many, especially considering the circumstances that led to her departure.

Njeru's appointment to the position last year was seen as a strategic move by Governor Anne Waiguru to strengthen her cabinet. However, it appears that Njeru had other plans, as she quickly established links with Kirinyaga women representative Purity Ngirici, a known political adversary of Waiguru.

As the county executive committee member for gender and youth, Njeru was responsible for forwarding important information to Ngirici's camp, further fueling the allegations of her being a spy.

In her resignation letter, dated January 15, 2020, Njeru stated, 'It is with recognition of the magnitude of responsibility bestowed upon me that I tender my resignation from the office of county executive committee member for gender and youth effective January 15, 2020.'

However, it appears that Njeru's resignation was not entirely voluntary. Governor Waiguru had written to her on December 9, 2019, expressing concerns over her overall performance. The governor's letter read, 'Given that you are county executive committee member responsible for effective and efficient service delivery of your department, I hold you accountable for the overall underperformance.'
