On Sunday, al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack on a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) military base in Manda Bay, Lamu County, killing several people and injuring others.
Hours after the attack, a section of residents in nearby villages are now fleeing to other areas for fear of another attack, citing the government's failure to assure them of their security.
Residents of Magogoni and Sinambio villages are seeking refuge in remote villages where they feel they will be more secure, as the Sunday incident has created tension making it difficult to stay calm.
According to the US Africa Command, one US military service member and two Department of Defence contractors died in the attack, while two US Department of Defense members were wounded.
The Kenya Defence forces reported that four suspected terrorists were killed in the attack, and so far, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the Sunday attack.
Manda Airstrip is located next to Camp Simba, a Kenyan naval base with a US military presence.
