January 6, 2020 - The rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Grade 4 has gotten off to a smooth start, with Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha confirming that over 99% of schools across the country have received the necessary books.

Magoha made the remarks during an impromptu visit to Mutomo, Gatundu, and Kimunyu Primary Schools in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, where he also emphasized the importance of teachers using the National Education Management Information System (Nemis) to ensure accurate capitation disbursement.

He noted that a few schools were yet to receive the books but would start using them on the next day after their arrival. Magoha attributed the delay in far-flung areas such as Turkana to heavy downpours.

For incoming Standard One pupils, Magoha said that although the government had produced books, more could be produced if more pupils enrolled than expected.

Magoha also warned teachers against turning children away due to unpaid school fees, lunch money, or uniform, emphasizing that all children should be allowed to remain in class until arrangements were made to secure the school requirements.
