On 23rd December 2019, the Court of Appeal awarded ODM Senator Agnes Zani Sh6 million in damages after ruling that an article published by Standard Group was defamatory.
The article, published on March 9, 2014, under the headline 'Revealed: The inside story of ODM's Men in Black,' alleged that Zani was involved in organizing chaos and disrupting elections.
However, the appellate judges found that the article was defamatory and that all elements of defamation were proved. They said the words published directly associated Zani as the organizer or as a member of the shadowy group called Men in Black.
According to the judges, the publication of the article was prominent and covered two pages of the Sunday paper, with Zani's photo and a detailed description of the alleged events.
Standard Group had claimed that the article was published for the benefit of the public and with no malice or intention against Zani.
