On January 6, 2020, investigative authorities announced plans to question Deputy President William Ruto over the illicit sale of state-owned hotels.

The hotels in question include Kisumu Sunset Hotel, Kabarnet Hotel, Mombasa Beach Hotel, and the Kenya Safari Lodges, which were sold to a Chinese tycoon by a powerful government official.

According to Oruchum Erick, a detective, the refurbishments of the hotels were set to start next month and conclude within eight months, but the sale of the properties has put a halt to these plans.
