On January 5, 2020, Kenyan comedian and TV host Vincent Mwasia, popularly known as Chipukeezy, sparked controversy after posting a picture of himself in a graduation gown on social media.
However, his claim of graduating from Mount Kenya University (MKU) with a degree was met with skepticism by social media users, particularly the university's students.
Mount Kenya University students flooded the comments section, discrediting Chipukeezy's post and alleging they had never seen him in class before.
Online detectives soon dug deeper, searching through Mount Kenya University's graduation lists for Vincent Mwasia's name, but it was nowhere to be found.
Despite suggestions to search with a differently spelt name, the results were still negative, leaving many to question the authenticity of Chipukeezy's degree.
Acquisition of fake academic papers is not a new phenomenon in Kenya, with politicians and businessmen often accused of 'graduating' with degrees from prestigious universities.
Chipukeezy has yet to comment on the matter, but it is clear that he has been caught off guard by the backlash.
