Kenya's women's volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, made a strong comeback to beat Egypt 3-1 in the opening match of the Africa Tokyo Olympics qualifier at the Palais polyvalent des sports (Paposy) Arena in Yaoundé on January 5, 2020.

The match was a repeat of the 2016 Rio qualifiers semi-finals, where Egypt triumphed 3-2 at the same venue. However, Kenya's coach Paul Bitok made a last-minute change to his line-up, starting with Noel Murambi ahead of Leonida Kasaya.

Despite trailing 10-11 in the first set, Kenya's players regained their composure and used long services to destabilize Egypt's reception and destroy their combinations. The team eventually won the set 25-15 to tie the game at 1-1.

However, Egypt's coach Marco Queiroga blamed inexperience for the loss, stating that Kenya's team was more experienced and had played in big competitions like the World Cup. He also noted that Kenya had many options on their bench, unlike Egypt's fairly young team.

Kenya's coach Paul Bitok attributed the team's success to their ability to understand Egypt's playing style and use long services to destabilize their reception. He also praised his players for their fighting spirit and ability to adapt to the game.

Kenya will play Botswana in their second match on Monday, looking to maintain their momentum in the competition.
