Published on January 5, 2020, a chaotic scene unfolded at a funeral in Nyatike, Migori County, when a group of youth stormed the burial of high school principal Joseph Ayogo Onditi.

According to eyewitnesses, the youths, armed with crude weapons, attacked a section of the mourners, prompting bodyguards of several politicians present to cock their guns. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, in the presence of area MP Tom Odege and Governor Okoth Obado.

Chaos started when Odege rose to address the mourners, and the youths began heckling him, leading to a bitter exchange of words. The situation escalated, resulting in a stampede that left scores of people injured.

Obado and Odege criticized a clique of politicians whom they accused of hiring goons to cause trouble at the event. The Migori governor stated, 'I want to ask our people to deal with leaders who thrive in hiring goons to disrupt public functions as a way of getting noticed. Such people should never be elected to any positions.'
