On December 1, 2019, a massive theft occurred at a godown in Athi River, with over 350 flat-screen television sets worth Sh15 million going missing. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since recovered 373 units, with 243 of them found at a residential house in Buruburu Phase IV, where 56-year-old John Maina was arrested.
According to the DCI, Maina's accomplices were arrested on December 31, 2019, in Machakos, where 130 Synix television sets were recovered from a house in Mbiuni. The trio will be charged with robbery with violence tomorrow.
DCI's Forensic Intelligence led the detectives to Kitengela, where the lorry used to ferry the stolen TVs had been hidden. The vehicle has since been impounded. The search for other accomplices and the remaining part of the robbed items continues.
Under the penal code, a person charged with robbery could face up to fourteen years in prison. However, if the robbery involves violence, the convict may be sentenced to death, or at the mercy of the president, serve a life sentence.
