On December 29, 2019, Guinea Bissau held a presidential re-run election, which was won by Umaro Sissoco Embalo of the Movement for Democratic Alternative (Madem-G 15) with 53.55% of the votes.
However, the African Party for Guinea and Cape Vert Independence (PAIGC), the ruling party, has filed a petition at the Supreme Court to nullify the election results, citing irregularities, nullities, and manipulations.
PAIGC's Domingos Simões Pereira stated that the provisional results had 'irregularities, nullities and manipulations.'
Supporters of President-elect Embalo argue that the allegations have no legal basis.
The USA embassy in Bissau, however, congratulated Guinea Bissau on a successful presidential re-run, stating that the elections were 'just, transparent, free and conducted in an orderly way.'
