Published on January 5, 2020, a shocking revelation has come to light as Kenyans share their worst punishments they give to their spouses when they have wronged them.
Some of these narrations are heartbreaking, with women opening up about the abuse they suffered at the hands of their partners.
One woman, Lilian, shared a particularly disturbing story of how her husband used to lock her in the toilet, even when she was pregnant.
'My husband used to lock me in the toilet. When I was pregnant, he would tell me to sleep in the bathroom, he would lock me in the toilet, and he would pick a fight with me at 3am,' she said.
'I would sit on the toilet mat, until he was ready to let me out. I would miss going to work because of this issue, I had to make up excuses so my boss wouldn’t fire me.'
Another woman, Leah, shared a story of how her husband had an affair and then turned things against her.
'I knew that my husband was having an affair but when I went to the place he used to live and confronted him he turned things against me,' she said.
'At the time we lived apart and anytime when he came home we would chat nicely to me, but when we go to the bedroom he would sleep in his suit and he sleeps on the foot of the bed while I sleep on the other side.'
Tony, another victim of abuse, shared a story of how his husband made him sleep on a mattress for nine years.
'In public we were this wonderful couple who showed love and affection, but trust me when we get to the bedroom I take my mattress and sleep on the floor,' he said.
'I did this for nine months and then in the morning I am the first one to wake up so that my kids don’t run to our bedroom and find me sleeping on the floor.'
