On January 2, 2019, a Mombasa Raha bus was sprayed with bullets by suspected al-Shaabab militants at Nyangoro, Witu, in Lamu county, leaving three people dead and two injured.
Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna assured the public that the country is safe, citing the successful Operation Linda Boni, which aimed to flush out Al Shabaab operatives from Boni Forest.
According to Oguna, five attackers were involved, with four being killed and one arrested to assist with investigations.
Despite the attack, Oguna stated that the security situation in the country is stable, with security forces beefing up presence in areas prone to insecurity, including Lamu.
He also emphasized that the government is working to improve socio-economic development in the region, with 450 government projects initiated to provide employment opportunities.
“The security situation in the country is stable and the government wishes to assure the public that security has been beefed up in areas that may have experienced incidences on insecurity,” Oguna said during a press briefing.
