Residents in Kerio Valley gathered for a peace meeting in June 2019, marking a significant step towards ending decades-long banditry attacks in the region.

As schools in the area prepare to reopen on Monday, security officials have assured parents that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure a smooth start to the new term.

Over 60 schools located along the borders of Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, and West Pokot counties will reopen without incident, thanks to a peace pact signed in Chesegon, West Pokot County, in 2019.

Community leaders, including MPs William Kamket, Peter Lochakapong, Kangogo Bowen, William Cheptumo, and William Kisang, signed the peace accord and vowed to work closely with local elders to maintain peace.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner Ahmed Omar stated that security personnel will be on high alert to prevent any tension as schools reopen.

West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello commended the Pokot, Marakwet, and Turkana communities for abandoning banditry and maintaining peace.

“We expect all our institutions to open without any delays. We assure parents that everything is under control,” Commissioner Omar said.
