Kenyan Premier League leaders Gor Mahia edged a stubborn Wazito FC 1-0 in a thrilling match at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday, January 4, 2020.
Wazito, who started brightly, had their first real chance in the 27th minute when Kenneth Muguna's low shot was easily handled by Gor Mahia custodian Boniface Oluoch.
Wazito's Joe Waithira tested Gor Mahia's defense with a long-range shot in the second minute, but it was Gor Mahia who eventually broke the deadlock in the 58th minute through Charles Momanyi's header from Kenneth Muguna's free kick.
Former Gor Mahia midfielder Ali Abondo came in for Joe Waithira, while Pistone Mutamba was rested for Joshua Otieno as Wazito continued their desperate search for an equaliser.
Lawrence Juma found Wazito keeper Kevin Onyango napping with a beautifully struck volley from outside the box that hit the upright and bounced off the line as Wazito survived yet another scare.
Gor Mahia remain on top with 32 points with two matches at hand.
Elsewhere, Tusker registered the biggest win of the day by humbling struggling Chemelil Sugar 7-0 at the Muhoroni Stadium.
George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo and Timothy Otieno scored two goals each, while Humphrey Mieno and Hashim Sempala grabbed one each to ensure the Brewers start the year on a high.
At Kasarani, KCB rallied from a goal down to hold Mathare to a 1-1 draw, while Kakamega Homeboyz FC defeated Kisumu All Stars FC 4-0 in a one-sided encounter played at Bukhungu stadium.
