January 4, 2020, marked a difficult day for Henry Kamwara Muturi, a Kiambu-based administration police officer, as he was ordered by a court to pay his ex-wife Sh84,000 plus Sh9,000 monthly upkeep.

According to Muturi, his salary as an AP officer is not enough to meet the demands of the court, leaving him feeling depressed and contemplating quitting his job.

‘I am struggling to make ends meet. The school lunch costs Sh6,000, education trips cost Sh1,500, and there are other expenses such as clothing, food, and medical bills that total Sh84,300,’ Muturi said in an interview.

With a family of his own, Muturi lives in a single room with his current wife and three children, making it even harder for him to cope with the financial burden.

He is now calling on the police service commission and the Independent Police Oversight authority to intervene on his behalf.
