January 4, 2020, marked a day of intense debate in Kenya's political landscape as leaders from various regions weighed in on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). At the center of the storm was Kandara MP Alice Wahome, who had made remarks that sparked widespread criticism.
Wahome's comments, which alleged that the BBI was a ploy to create positions for particular individuals, did not sit well with her colleagues. Muranga Women Representative Sabina Chege and her Migori counterpart Gladys Wanga were among those who took issue with Wahome's remarks, accusing her of seeking cheap publicity and misleading the nation.
Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Chairperson Betty Miyandazi also chimed in, urging Wahome to focus her energies on serving the people rather than making divisive comments.
Not to be outdone, Ndaragua MP Jeremiah Kioni took a swipe at Wahome, expressing his support for the BBI and the efforts of President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga to bring about positive change in the country.
As the debate raged on, Wahome remained unapologetic, defending the Judiciary and calling for respect of the independence of the three arms of government. However, her stance was met with skepticism by a section of Murang'a leaders, who accused her of dragging President Uhuru Kenyatta into dirty politics.
County Deputy Governor Kamau Maina and former Maragua MP Elias Mbau were among those who spoke out against Wahome, defending the government's development programs and accusing her of hypocrisy.
‘Kandara MP said, whatever, she said since she is enjoying freedom of speech but when other people talk, she claim they are being sent to say so,' Mbau said.
Meanwhile, a section of Murang'a Members of the County Assembly (MCA's) also weighed in, telling Wahome to stop stirring political temperature in central region.
