January 4, 2020, marked the return of the dreaded Nairobi Fly, a menace that has left residents of the city in discomfort. The Paederus beetle, commonly known as the Nairobi Fly, is known to cause severe burning and itchy sensations on the skin.
The insects are usually predominant after heavy rainy seasons, which provide conducive conditions for the insect to thrive. In Nairobi, they appear to have increased in numbers, causing havoc to the residents.
Acting Health Nairobi County secretary Veska Kangogo stated that only a few medical cases have been reported at public health facilities, including Kibera GSU and Ngong road Health Clinic. 'The numbers are not many, but we are keeping watch of the situation,' she said.
The Nairobi Fly is red and black in color and about 6–10 mm long. Inflammation on the skin occurs when the Nairobi fly has been crushed onto the skin, releasing the pederin toxin.
Residents have been taking to social media to complain about the sudden invasion of the animal. Many have shared their experiences of being stung by the Nairobi Fly, with some describing the discomfort and pain as 'on another level.'
