As we welcome the new year, many of us are tempted to make resolutions that promise a better future. But have you ever stopped to think about the futility of this exercise?

Research has shown that only a measly eight per cent of people who make new year resolutions actually succeed. The rest of us are left to pick up the pieces of broken dreams and try to make the same dreams work in the future.

But why bother? The lives of most human beings are a work in progress, and what was supposed to happen will happen anyway. So, why not just live in the moment and forget about the resolutions?

Let's take a closer look at some of the most popular themes of new year resolutions: health, money, and spirituality or religion. None of these three things seems to be in the control of Wanjiku, given the past trends.

Good health will remain a pipe dream for many Kenyans for a long time, even with the promise of Universal Healthcare for All from the Jubilee government. The food that Kenyans eat is toxic, and banned carcinogenic pesticides continue to be used despite the ban by the government.
