On January 3, 2020, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya led a massive clean-up operation in Kakamega town, demolishing structures illegally erected on the road reserve.

During the operation, the governor came face to face with rogue matatu operators and traders, who had been causing chaos in the town.

Mr Oparanya expressed his frustration with the traders, who had deserted the multi-million bus terminus to congest the streets.

He directed that all saloon cars be parked at a designated site near Bukhungu stadium and ordered traders operating from the streets to return to the main market.

The governor also warned traders who had leased out county kiosks at Sh5,000 but had defaulted on paying the Sh1,500 monthly levy.

“I know we have employed corrupt officers who collect bribes from the traders to be allowed to operate from prohibited areas, I will lead the demolition of the structures until we bring sanity in the town," he said.
