On the night of January 3, 2020, a dramatic scene unfolded on the Naivasha-Nakuru highway in Gilgil, Kenya, as a Kitale-bound bus caught fire.

A rear tyre burst, sparking a blaze that engulfed the vehicle, but fortunately, the 50 passengers on board escaped unhurt, thanks to the quick thinking of the commuters.

According to Gilgil Sub-county Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru, the passengers rushed out of the bus before the fire spread, but unfortunately, they were unable to salvage their personal effects, which were worth thousands of shillings.

"However, they were not able to salvage their personal effects worth thousands of shillings," Mr Opuru said.

Attempts to put out the fire were unsuccessful, and the shaken passengers spent the rest of the night at Gilgil Police Station, where the bus company made arrangements for them to be driven to their destinations.

"We brought them here for their own safety," Mr Opuru said.

The wreckage was towed to the police station, where it remained.
