On January 3, 2020, Kenya's Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha emphasized the importance of adhering to government-issued fees guidelines during the commissioning of the Elimu Scholarship of the Wings to Fly program in Nairobi.
Prof Magoha stated that every child should have unfettered access to school, and warned school heads against turning away needy students for lack of school fees this term.
He also assured that this year's Competency Based Curriculum textbooks would be delivered on time to schools before they reopen for first term studies.
Meanwhile, Kenya National Parents Association Chairman Julius Keverenge has called on the government to have full control over school fees charged by public schools.
Chairman Keverenge expressed concerns that some public schools' management boards have violated government orders not to charge school fees outside agreed limits, making payment of school fees a challenging task for parents and guardians.
He urged the government to investigate complaints from parents regarding rogue principals and school management boards who charge unknown monies, and suggested that the government consider funding 100% of school fees in public schools, tertiary colleges, and higher institutions of learning.
