On January 3, 2020, a Sudanese military plane crashed in West Darfur state, killing at least 18 people, including four children.

The Antonov 12 aircraft had taken off from El Geneina airport, the state capital, just five minutes before the crash.

The plane was delivering aid to the area, which has seen deadly clashes between ethnic groups in recent days.

Among the victims were seven crew members, three judges, and eight civilians, including the four children.

Army spokesman Amer Mohammed al-Hassan said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Violence in West Darfur has resulted in at least 48 deaths and 241 injuries this week, according to Sudan's Red Crescent.

Clashes broke out between Arab and African groups in El Geneina on Sunday night and continued into the following day.
