Derby County's Championship campaign received a boost on Thursday, thanks to a winning debut from former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

Rooney, who had been training with the team since August, was named captain for his first appearance and played the full match, despite it being his first competitive game since October.

He set up the opening goal for Jack Marriott and provided a pin-point diagonal pass to Andre Wisdom, whose low cross was turned home by Martyn Waghorn, in Derby's 2-1 win against Barnsley.

Rooney's debut coincided with Derby's team winning successive matches for the first time this season, but they remain 17th in the table.

Elsewhere, Charlton Athletic began their new era under fresh ownership with a 1-0 defeat at Swansea, where Yan Dhanda's first-half strike propelled the Swans into the play-off places.
