On January 2, 2020, a military transport plane crashed in Sudan's West Darfur, killing 18 people on board.

The Antonov 12 plane, which took off from El-Geneina, crashed just five minutes later, resulting in the deaths of its crew of seven, three judges, and eight other civilians, including four children.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

El-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, has seen recent deadly clashes between ethnic groups, and the city has a heavy military presence, with security reinforcements and visits by senior officials in the past week.
