Published on January 3, 2020, armed assailants killed three people and injured two others in Kenya's Lamu county, a coastal region near the border with Somalia.

Lamu county is a key area where Islamist group al Shabaab carries out attacks to pressure Kenya into withdrawing its forces from Somalia.

Kenya has a military contingent in an African Union peacekeeping force that helps defend Somalia's government against al Shabaab.

According to a report by Lamu county police, the attack occurred when armed men sprayed bullets into a passenger bus in the early afternoon.

"Three men were shot at close range," the report said, adding they had died instantly, while two others were injured.

Al Shabaab fighters stormed Garissa University in the area in April 2015, killing at least 148 people in an attack targeting Christian students.

Al Shabaab seeks to topple Somalia's government and establish its own rule based on a strict interpretation of sharia law.
