Kenya's Notable Court Cases in 2020

As the year begins, several high-profile court cases are set to take shape in Kenya, involving governors, former Cabinet secretaries, and other senior government officials.

Among those facing graft-related charges are Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Moses Lenolkulal (Samburu), and Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu).

Mr Sonko's case is set to be mentioned on January 15, despite his challenge to the decision to bar him from accessing his office.

Mr Ojaamong's trial resumes on January 22, with his defence team expected to cross-examine the last witness, while Mr Waititu's trial is expected to start on January 28.

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's trial resumes on January 27.

Other notable cases include the trial of former Cabinet secretaries Henry Rotich (Treasury), Hassan Wario (Sports), and Kamau Thugge (Treasury), who are set to face the defence on February 3.

Former National Land Commission chairman Muhammad Swazuri, former Kenya Railways boss Atanas Maina, and former MDs Joe Sang (Kenya Pipeline Company), Dr Ben Chumo, and Ken Tarus (Kenya Power) are also set to face trial.

Additionally, the trial of Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who has been charged with the murder of Sharon Otieno and her unborn baby, is pending in court.

Ms Sarah Wairimu and Mr Peter Karanja, who have denied murdering Dutch billionaire Tob Cohen, are also set to face trial.
