As the 2020 US presidential election heats up, Bernie Sanders has taken aim at his Democratic rival Joe Biden, warning that his weak record and baggage will hinder their chances of defeating Donald Trump.
Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post, Sanders said: “It’s just a lot of baggage that Joe takes into a campaign, which isn’t going to create energy and excitement. He brings into this campaign a record which is so weak that it just cannot create the kind of excitement and energy that is going to be needed to defeat Donald Trump.”
Published on January 2, 2020, Sanders' comments come as he reported a significant fund-raising haul of over $34.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, surpassing Biden's $22.7 million and former Mayor Pete Buttigieg's $24.7 million.
Despite his attacks on Biden, Sanders stuck to his familiar message on the trail in Iowa, denouncing income inequality and championing his signature policy proposal, “Medicare for all.”
As he boarded his campaign bus, Sanders highlighted the grassroots support his campaign has received, saying: “That tells me the kind of grass-roots support that we have and tells me why we’re going to win the nomination and why we’re going to defeat Donald Trump.”
