On January 2, 2020, a passenger bus traveling from Mombasa to Lamu was ambushed by suspected Al Shabaab fighters at Nyongoro area in Lamu County, resulting in the deaths of at least three people and injuring several others.
Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed that the bus was heading to Lamu from Mombasa when it came under attack.
Security teams have since been deployed to the area to pursue the attackers.
