On January 13, a taskforce established by the government to evaluate Kenya's mental health situation will begin conducting public hearings in Meru County.
The taskforce was inaugurated on December 11, 2019, by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, following a Cabinet meeting on November 21, 2019, chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to the Ministry of Health, the taskforce will assess the current mental health status in Kenya, including social determinants and factors contributing to mental illnesses.
They will also evaluate mental health systems, including the legal and policy framework, and provide recommendations.
"The taskforce will outline legal policy and administration reform proposals aimed at transforming mental health systems for improved quality of life," the Ministry of Health stated.
During the public hearings, citizens will be required to share mental health priority issues in their areas, proposals for practical solutions, and their level of preparedness to address these challenges.
Notably, Nominated Nakuru MCA Elizabeth Gichuki has been advocating for improved mental health facilities in the county, including increased funding and the establishment of sound policies.
"The county has no sound policies on mental health and should draft laws that will govern the increasing number of patients," Ms Gichuki said.
