On January 2, 2020, Zesco United announced that they had secured the services of Kenyan forward Jesse Were on a new two-year deal.

The 32-year-old striker, who has been a key player for the Zambian champions, has committed to a half a million shillings a month deal for the duration of the contract, alongside a 'handsome' six-figure loyalty bonus.

According to Zesco United CEO Richard Mulenga, Were's decision to extend his stay with the club was a welcome one, saying, 'We are delighted to announce that Jesse Were has extended his stay with us for the next two years. Were has been a key part of this football club's success as such we are extremely delighted that he has made the right decision to be with us for the next two years.'

Were's new deal comes amidst interest from South African club Baroka, managed by former Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr, who had made an informal approach to Zesco earlier in the week.

Despite struggling in national team colours, Were has enjoyed success on the pitch, scoring an average 20 goals each season, and winning the league title on three occasions. He has also won the domestic cup title and helped the team reach the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League.

Were was also nominated as the Africa based Player of the Year in 2016.
