On January 2, 2020, Athletics Kenya chairman Jack Tuwei announced plans to select the country's marathon team for the Tokyo Olympics early.
This decision was made to give athletes picked ample time to focus on preparations, as many of them will compete in various races in April.
With only three months left for preparations after April, good planning is crucial to ensure athletes are well-prepared for the Olympics marathon and race walk competitions, which will be hosted in Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, about 800 kilometres from Tokyo.
The Olympics marathon and race walk competitions were shifted to Sapporo due to the high temperatures expected in Tokyo during the Games in August.
The women's marathon will be held on August 8, followed by the men's race the next day.
