On January 2, 2020, a Lamu-bound bus was attacked by suspected Al-Shabaab militants at Nyongoro area within Lamu County, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others.

Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia confirmed the incident, stating that the bus had originated from Mombasa and was headed to Lamu.

Transport on the Lamu-Garsen road was suspended as security agencies, including the army, combed the area to ensure the safety of the public.
