On January 2, 2020, Sudan's Sovereign Council issued a stern warning to those involved in the recent tribal clashes in West Darfur State.
According to Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, deputy chairman of Sudan's Sovereign Council, the clashes in El Geneina, the capital city of West Darfur State, would not go unpunished.
"The unfortunate events witnessed by El Geneina will not pass without accountability. Freedom and democracy do not mean chaos," Dagalo told reporters.
He emphasized the authorities' ability to reach all perpetrators and those responsible for the events, who would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
Investigation committees from the armed forces and the police forces have been formed to investigate the clashes, which left at least five people killed and eight injured.
Local authorities in West Darfur State have declared a curfew in El Geneina and closed all government institutions, schools, and markets.
