Detectives in Murang'a are investigating a cartel behind the theft of Sh4.1 million from three Family Bank branches in the county and Nyeri.

The thieves, who manipulated the ATMs' systems, broke into three branches in Murang'a, Karatina, and Kangari on Friday and Saturday last week.

At the Murang'a branch, they stole Sh1.5 million, while in Karatina and Kangari, they took away Sh1.2 million and Sh1.4 million respectively.

Investigations suggest that the suspects may have colluded with bank employees who disabled the CCTV cameras to prevent recording of the robberies.

Julian Muthini, the Murang'a County Criminal Investigation Officer, said a team of detectives has been assigned to conduct forensic investigations at the bank's Murang'a branch.
