Published on December 29, 2019, Safaricom has made significant strides in the fixed internet market, surpassing its long-time rival Zuku. According to the latest data from the Communications Authority (CA), Safaricom currently has 154,603 fixed home and office connections, accounting for a market share of 34%.
On the other hand, Zuku, owned by the Wananchi Group, has 151,548 fixed home and office connections, translating to a market share of 33.3%. Jamii Telecommunications, the third-largest provider of fixed internet connections, has 66,572 connections, an increase of 8% from 61,508 at the end of June 2019.
These numbers indicate that Zuku has lost its market share, while Safaricom's fixed internet has gained ground. In the three months to September, Safaricom added 16,779 connections, nearly five times more than Zuku's 5,199 connections.
As Safaricom continues to invest in its network, the company expects to maintain a high level of capital expenditure in Full Year 2020, with investments ranging from Sh. 36 to Sh. 39 billion. This investment will support the growth of its fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the Business revenue streams.
