On December 29, 2019, Migori County Commissioner Joseph Rotich announced a crackdown on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kuria West, Kuria East, and Suna West constituencies.

The move comes after reports emerged that over 200 young girls from the Kuria community were secretly transported to Tanzania in early December to undergo the procedure.

Rotich warned that security agencies would pursue and arrest parents and guardians who colluded with their Tanzanian relatives to smuggle their daughters across the border.

FGM remains outlawed in Kenya due to its retrogressive nature and the significant health risks it poses to women.

Rotich emphasized that it was the responsibility of the government and all Kenyans to protect the lives of girls and women from outdated cultural practices.
