On December 28, 2019, a 13-year-old girl from Kisumu County was on the brink of taking her own life after her parents couldn't afford her education fees.
She had scored 391 marks in her KCPE exam at Xaverian Primary School in Kisumu Central and was selected to join Asumbi Girls in early January 2020.
However, when she realized her parents couldn't raise the necessary funds, she wrote a suicide note stating, 'I know it is not the only way to solve this problem, but it is the best option for me to take.'
Fortunately, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino came to her rescue, vowing to pay her school fees and help her achieve her dreams.
He took to social media, saying, 'I will pay school fees for this learner to ensure she achieves her dreams. A child belongs to the community and I would like to give an opportunity to others the same way I was given through fundraising and through selling Chang'aa.'
