As the festive season comes to an end, Nairobi's road network is in a state of disrepair, causing frustration for motorists.
The situation has been exacerbated by the recent downpour, which has filled the potholes with stagnant water, causing anxiety for drivers who fear sinking their cars into the holes.
Residents like Frank Mutisya, who lives in Githurai 45, are also affected, with some roads taking up to 40 minutes to traverse.
“Tunalipa ushuru lakini barabara hazitengenezwi. Kwanza mwaka mpya hatulipi ushuru,” lamented Collins Achuka, a matatu driver operating on the Kasarani route.
“The roads have become impassable. I have taken 40 minutes to drive from the Khoja Roundabout along Tom Mboya Street to Ronald Ngala Street,” said Frank Mutisya.
As a result, mechanics operating along Grogan Area in Nairobi Downtown are struggling, with untreated sewage flowing along roads, making them impassable.
“Motorists now fear bringing their vehicles for repair, the smell is terrible. No driver wants to risk a slow puncture by driving his car through sewage. Motor vehicle spare parts dealers and mechanics continue to count losses,” said a mechanic.
Even pedestrians and hawkers are not immune to the wrath of angry drivers, who splash dirty water on bystanders.
The Nairobi County Government has yet to start repairs, leaving motorists to face the harsh conditions.
