Published on December 29, 2019, Safaricom has made a significant breakthrough in the fixed internet market, surpassing Zuku for the first time since it started offering the services in 2017.

According to the Communications Authority of Kenya's report for the first three months to September, Safaricom had 154,603 fixed home and office connections, edging out Zuku's 151,548 connections.

This marks a significant shift in the market, with Safaricom increasing its market share by 1.3 percentage points from 32.7% at the end of June, while Zuku shed 1.5 percentage points from 34.8% in the same period.

As Safaricom continues to invest in its fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-business revenue streams, it is expected to maintain its position as the fixed internet market leader.

"We expect similar levels of capex investment in FY 2020 in the range of Sh36-39 billion," Safaricom said in its 2019 annual report. "This will go into strengthening our mobile network and supporting our growth in fixed line as we look to further grow our fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the Business revenue streams."

The rise of Safaricom in the fixed internet market comes amid reports that Wananchi Group, Zuku's owner, was looking to exit the Kenyan market two years ago.
