The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) has launched a major crackdown on rental flats in New Valley Kitengela estate after receiving complaints about the discharge of raw sewage in public spaces.
Residents of the estate have been protesting against the discharge of sewage, which they claim is being facilitated by landlords bribing public health officials.
The foul-smelling sewer water flows into the New Valley River, which eventually drains into the Athi River, posing a significant environmental and health risk.
Nema Director-General Mamo B Mamo warned that the situation was an environmental disaster in waiting and vowed to take action.
“This is an environmental disaster and health hazard that puts hundreds of lives to risk. We cannot tolerate it,” Mamo said during a recent inspection of sewer lines that discharged sewage on Balozi Road.
Meanwhile, residents of Ongata Rongai are demanding a special probe into shoddy works on roads in the area, with some calling for the contractor of Nazarene road to be arrested.
